The S&O Center is delighted to invite you to meet with Corentin de Chatelperron, French engineer and adventurer!
Corentin is an expert in innovation low-tech and for a few years has traveled around the world aboard a laboratory boat to identify, experiment, document and disseminate low-tech innovations. Over the past 4 years, it has made stops in 16 countries and allowed the study of more than 40 low-tech products.
A short bio:
After completing his engineering degree at the Nantes-based Institut Catholique d'Arts et Métiers (ICAM), France, Corentin worked for 3 years on a number of eco-tourism programs before traveling to Bangladesh in 2009.
While employed at the TaraTari shipyard, Corentin discovered the basis for his own personal project, namely the use of a local natural resource, in this case jute (or burlap) fiber, to build a more ecological and better adapted boat.
After the TaraTari sailboat that first rolled off the assembly line, he launched a second vessel prototype, called the "Gold of Bengal", a 100% composite jute boat inaugurated in February 2013 in Bangladesh.
Corentin set sail on the waters of the Bay of Bengal for 6 months to test this unique boat. This expedition was also an opportunity to test autonomy thanks to low-technologies, that is to say devices that enable basic needs to be met in an accessible, simple and ecological way. These six months of adventure allowed Corentin to reflect on the meaning of innovation and gave birth to a new project: the Low-Tech Lab, a collaborative research programme on low-tech.
In order to promote low-tech innovation, Corentin, accompanied by Pierre-Alain Lévêque and Elaine le Floch, set sail again on 23 February 2016. Aboard a 45-foot catamaran called Nomade des Mers, they will spend three years meeting ingenious inventors and inspiring innovations. The aim of this new project is to offer everyone open source knowledge about low-tech, while involving all types of players (individual students, companies, associations, etc.).
