Federica DE STEFANO
Assistant Professor
Management & Human Resources
Biography
I am an Assistant Professor of Management and Human Resources at HEC Paris and a Senior Fellow of Wharton People Analytics.
My research examines how organizations' decisions on people management shape organizational and individual outcomes. My overarching objective is to provide empirical evidence that fostering high-quality jobs—characterized by equitable compensation, job security, safety, and growth opportunities—can yield mutual benefits for both employers and employees. In pursuing this goal, I have developed two interrelated streams of research that analyze: 1) employee mobility; and 2) sustainable human resource management. In my first research stream, I investigate the implications of employee internal mobility and turnover for organizational performance and employees’ careers. In my second stream of work, I examine how human resource management can contribute to the social sustainability of organizations, with a focus on labor market inequality and occupational health and safety. Theoretically, my research seeks to speak to the literature on careers, human resource management, and strategic human capital. Empirically, much of my work is quantitative and based on field studies in organizational contexts and large administrative data. I have created several databases collecting unique archival data that merge personnel and performance data from a diverse set of organizations across industries. I complement such data with surveys and qualitative interviews.
I am a member of the Editorial Board of Organization Science, Human Resource Management and Human Resource Management Review. I have been awarded with several research grants, including a Marie Curie grant from the European Commission to examine the relationship between employees’ health and safety and human capital strategies by firms (SAW - MSCA-IF-EF-RI). I serve as Representative at Large for the Competitive Strategy Interest Group and as Engagement Officer for the Strategic Human Capital Interest Group of the Strategic Management Society (SMS).
Prior to joining HEC Paris, I was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. I hold a Ph.D. in Business Administration and Management, a M.Sc. in International Management, a BA in Management from Bocconi University in Milan (Italy), and a M.Sc. in Management Science and Corporate Management from Fudan University in Shanghai (China).
