The HEC Master in Management, paving the way to a career at the top
Interview with Eloïc Peyrache, Associate Dean of the HEC Grande Ecole
What do you think makes this program so successful?
The HEC Paris Master in Management offers its students a unique structure.
Through the course of the two academic years that make up the Master in Management, the student first tackles an overview of all Management topics in the M1, and then gains a strong expertise in their chosen field by taking on one of the 20 specializations available in M2. In addition to an academic specialization, the MiM also provides a business-sector specialization through the Certificates scheme. These programs, developed in connection with businesses, take place at the end of the course and allow students to choose from wide range of industry fields. This combination of sector and discipline-specific expertise provides a decided advantage to our students when they enter the job market.
The program hinges on a unique teaching style with half of the program in theory-based teaching and the other half of learning achieved through practical experience. This structure, which is ingrained in the DNA of the MiM, is highly appraised by our students. We emphasize theoretical teaching at the cutting edge of Management sciences and techniques, as well as valuing field projects such as the academies and Field Action projects which confront students with the real life situations being faced by organisations.
Furthermore, the teaching provided in the program is fueled by a professional body of global standing and centres of excellence such as: the Digital centre, the Entrepreneurship centre and the Society and Organisations centre. It is thanks to our wide variety of expertise recognized across the world that many highly reputed experts are regularly brought in to lead conferences on campus. The students of HEC Paris have thus had the chance to attend speeches by Muhammad Yunus, Bill Gates, Joseph Stiglitz and Ratan Tata.
Finally, the quality of our international partnerships positions us as a key institution in the global landscape of business schools. For example, among many other options, MiM students have the chance to study at MIT, Tsinghua and at IIM Ahmedabad within the framework of a double degree. They can also study in one of the 29 universities who are part of the CEMS network, among which we can count Saint-Gall University, London School of Economics and Keio University, as part of the CEMS joint degree.
HEC Paris graduates seem to go on to dazzling careers in a wide range of different sectors: how would you explain this?
The structure of the program, its world class reputation and the extraordinary quality of its students and professors give the Master in Management the power to accelerate the careers of its graduates to incredible levels.
The Master in Management is the most selective program in Europe (as highlighted by Forbes magazine). Each year we endeavour to bring together the best students from leading universities. With the recruitment of these exceptional students, HEC Paris has been able to make use of an exceptional alumni network. The “Alma Mater Index: Global Executives” ranking, founded by The Times, demonstrates HEC Paris’ ability to mould the future CEO’s of large multinational corporations.
The wide diversity in the range of specializations available leads to a wide diversity in the careers pursued by our graduates. Our M2 year specializations effectively allow our students to create their own program to fit with their own personal ambitions, whether they wish to pursue a future career in finance, consultancy, technology, the media or NGOs.
The Master in Management is a gateway to top international career opportunities. The United Kingdom comes in first place of the list of destinations reported by our graduates, followed by Germany and continental Europe. More and more of our alumni are starting off their careers in faraway countries such as North America, India or South-East Asia.
In addition to the global career progression that the MiM provides, it also offers access to the French-speaking business world. French is the official language of 27 countries and has now become the third language of business just after English and Mandarin (as shown by a study published by Bloomberg). The chance for our international students to learn French and to select electives taught in French acts as a springboard towards careers working in French-speaking markets as well as in French companies operating abroad. With the important role occupied by French multinational corporations, our international students have the chance to access senior positions in the head offices of large groups in France and abroad.
